10 TIPS FOR NEW WRITER’S

In for writer's on July 14, 2014 at 7:54 pm

writerSo you have decided to be a writer. I’m betting you have writing for a long time or have wanted to. You finally woke up one day and said OK I am going to do it. You sat at your computer and stared at the screen and then thought what the hell I do now. You may have even found this with Google search on how to be a writer. Before you read any further I want you to take a deep breath and repeat these words. I AM A WRITER. Say it a few times and get comfortable with saying it, till it sounds natural. Trust me it will get easier. All writers start out as newbies and unknowns. I am going to give you a few tips that help me out in the beginning and that I still use from time to time.

1 WRITE DAILY

It doesn’t matter what you write as long as you write, even if you only write a paragraph. Don’t worry about if it’s good or not. They say practice makes perfect and it is true. The more you write the better you will get. It will become habit and soon it will become part of your daily life like your morning coffee.

2 READ OFTEN

If you don’t read you can’t write well. Everyone has their own style. Reading other peoples work will help you start to discover your style. You can learn a lot from other writers. There is no one set way to string sentences together or words to use. In the beginning you may emulate a favorite author and that’s OK. Believe me your own voice will start to emerge.

3 DO NOT COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHERS
I remember in the beginning thinking, “I don’t write as well as this person” “I am not as successful as this person”. If you think like this for too long you will psych yourself out. Self-doubt is normal just don’t live there. Don’t try to be the next Stephen King, just be you. Compete only with yourself. It’s about being the best writer you can be. Enjoy the small triumphs and celebrate them. If you write a short story, or a poem share it be proud that you finished it.

4 LOOK OUT FOR SCAMS
The internet is full of people looking to cash in on people’s writing dreams. Do your research!!!!!
People will pay you for your work. Never pay to get a job. There are clubs and course that charge and there is nothing wrong with that. Some are helpful. Stephen King’s web site suggests https://www.writersmarket.com/LearnMore.aspx. There is a fee. If any person or web site tell you they have the secrets to success for a price I would steer clear. Most will just take your money and the only thing you will get is egg on your face.

5 JOIN A WRITER’S GROUP
If you have one in your local community join, If not join a group online. Writers groups give you a place to get feedback on your writing. No one like’s criticism but it is necessary to improve your skills. You will also find helpful links and make some friends. Try these two to start.

6 DON’T GIVE UP
Writing is a hard business and can be lonely. You will have moments when you want to through in the towel. You have to really want it. Submit your work, enter contest, start a blog, do it consistently. Expect rejection letters. Trust me you will get many. Just keep writing and pushing forward.

7 BE BOLD
Do not listen to people that say you can’t or that you are doing it wrong. If you have always wanted to be published in the New Yorker, Do it. Submit what you think is your best work. GO BIG OR GO HOME. Put your eye on the prize and go for it. The most successful people I know became that way by being relentless.

8 WRITE WHAT YOU WANT
You will get so much advice you will be confused. If your dream is to write a Novel, write it. Don’t let someone tell you that you must freelance first. If you want to be a poet be a poet. You will hear people say pick one genre and stick with it. That’s a load of bull. While its true most of us find a genre we tend to be drawn to you don’t have to be pigeonholed by it. My thing is horror and poetry. I jump away from that whenever the mood strikes. You find what you like the best, know what you want to say and then say it!

9 EDIT, EDIT, EDIT AND REWRITE
No one ever writes a good first draft. Write it then edit, then rewrite and repeat. If you need to find a beta reader. Try not to use close friends they mean well but won’t be able to tell you that something sucks. Sometimes we need to hear that, so we can fix it.

10 YOU ARE A WRITER
I mentioned this early. If you are already writing even if no one has seen it you are already a writer. The hardest person to convince of this will be you. I remember one of the first times my sister introduced me as, her Sister the writer. I thought I would be sick. Of course the person asked what do you write, who do you work for. My reply, I write horror but I also freelance. That was it the career went from struggling artist to, I am a writer. It has been nonstop from there. If you wake up thinking about writing you are a writer. If you write every day you are a writer. Keep saying it to yourself, and then say it to others. If this is what you dream of doing then you just have to go for it.

Are you a writer or an artist? Chance’s are if you are reading this you are. I know there is 101 places for writers to go and share their work for free.I belong to several. Sometimes you get noticed and sometimes you don’t. Some days you go on these sites and you feel like you get lost in the crowd. If you are a newbie it’s even harder to get recognized . I realize that everyone at this point uses social media. I am a complete junkie when it comes to that. I am also sure most of you have your own blogs and Facebook pages, and twitter and tumbler and etc, etc, etc. Nonetheless I am going to invite you to come and check out my new page on Facebook it called Write to Live.

I know another Facebook page, so why should like this page? This page is not about me. I do post on it but Write to live is about Writers and artist sharing their work. I want to build a community with a positive vibe. You can post your own links, or writing tips ask for feedback look for freelance work whatever you like. There is NO Catch! I’m not going to charge you a fee or tell you to become a member. It’s a Facebook page, you just come and like it and if you want share  what you got.

I know that positivity and encouragement is never a bad thing. WE can all be successful. There is room for everyone. Yes, I know it sounds cheesy and like bs. It’s not.Writers are some of the Most isolated people I know. We have to be we are always writing and that means being alone. Don’t get me wrong I am a people person and I love my friends. I am lucky. I have a supportive family. From time to time though they have a hard time understanding what it’s like. I can’t tell you how many times I have heard “ well how much money do you make” or “why would you write if you won’t get paid” My favorite came from my own husband. He asked me one day. Is your book close to being finished? I answered almost I have to do some rewrites. he looked at me very serious and asked “ when it’s done how  much will you get payed”  Come people you know someone who has said something similar. You can imagine the conversation that followed.

So come and visit, Talk with others who get it.Share, read and just have fun. I am really trying to get 1000 likes so help me out here.I look forward to getting to know you all.

BE A BETTER WRITER!

Have you ever wanted to just give up on the whole writing dream? I have more than a few times.. You find yourself thinking maybe I am just not good enough. Maybe you opened your email and got a rejection letter or worse an empty inbox. Then there is the money, or the lack there of. Writing is the easy part. the hard part is making it a career.I’m not going to be one of those people who gives you 5 easy tips on being a successful  writer. There will be  no dumb “become rich with your blog in 3 days” bs.So where is this all going? I am glad you asked.

I woke up this morning and checked my email as I always do. I saw that Cristian Mihai had a new post. I love his blog I read it all the time. Today his theme was different from his usual upbeat, enlightened and believe in yourself type post. Sorry to those of you that read him. I realize I am over simplifying. Today his post was filled with self-doubt. he admitted that he too thinks of giving up.He is in fact struggling financially. I was shocked,I mean here is a brilliant published author and artist who is struggling to make a living as a writer. What was even more unbelievable to me was that he thought of packing it in. I feel like if he gives up what does that mean for the rest of us?  Now I bet you are thinking that this lead me to have doubts about my own writing career. You would be wrong! The opposite is true I am more encouraged than ever.

As writers we are always thinking how to self promote. How to get more jobs writing. lets face it, it’s a hard business. You will find countless scams on the web for writing. There is an endless sea of articles and blogs filled with advice on writing. some are  good some are bad.  Hell, I have written a post on writing tips. God knows I have done some shameless self promoting. Now of course I want you to read this. I not only want you to read it but reblog it pass it along to friends. We all want to be successful. I am no different from anybody else right? Or maybe I am different or want to try to be. I propose this to you all.

Find a blog or a writer and promote them for a change. Be a shameless promoter for someone else. Don’t do it to get traffic to your blog or page, do it because it is the right thing to do. Have no expectations for a return or a thank you. We are all writers.Only another writer can understand what that dream means or how hard it is to keep that dream alive. Writing is not what we do, it is who we are! We don’t choose to write, we must write. It is a compulsion. If I am not writing I am thinking about writing. Good lord ,I have even had dreams about writing.

I look at it like this, If someone else succeeds then there is still hope for me and  for all of us really. We all start out as beginners and unknowns. JK Rowling’s was an unknown need I say more. I am going to give you three blogs that I want you to look at and if you find something you like Reblog it. The world needs writers and artist. The more the better!  Be unselfish and best of luck in your own  writing careers!

Cristian Mihai:

I guarantee you will find something you will love he is brilliant. I will let you see for yourself

http://cristianmihai.net/about/

Emile Pierce:This man is a fierce poet.he needs no bumps from  the likes of me but I simple love his work.

http://www.wurdzpoet.com/

Lauren DiDonato: She is new to the blog world but by no means a novice writer. I have no doubt that she will go all the way. Journalistic style and original as hell.

Beat Writer’s Block

In for writer's on June 19, 2014 at 8:16 pm

Have you ever found yourself trying to write and nothing happens? You’re sitting at your desk, starring at the key board and there is just nothing. You just find yourself void of intelligent thought. I have been there. In fact I was there today. It’s incredibly frustrating when you need and want to write and have no words. Don’t blame yourself it happens to us all.  So how do you beat writers block?  Try these five tricks. They have helped me more than once.

I have a favor to ask. Could you tell me comment section how you beat writer block? When I get enough tips I will post them with your name. If you have a blog leave me that link to. I am all about promoting other writers.

Read:

Try reading someone else’s work. It can spark many ideas and even new styles.

 Play Word Games:

I pick a random word and then see how many other words rhyme with it. Then I try to arrange them in a series of cohesive sentences.  Use a difficult word. You may end up with crap or something great. If nothing else you burned new words into your memory and have written something.

Brain Storm:

Write down names, places, opening lines. Write any and all story ideas that pop in your head. They don’t have to be good or even grammatically correct. Some of my best work comes from old notes revisited.

Music:

Music is a great tool of inspiration. A good song can make feel happy, sad, and angry, motivated, enlightened or can flood your mind with memories. The trick is to not think about writing. Just feel the music be in that moment. Then pick up your pen and hit replay. See what comes out.

STOP STOP STOP:

Get up and stretch. There is no use in banging your head against the wall. All you will get is a headache. Go get a drink, tea, a cup of coffee, a glass of wine, pick your poison. Find something other than writing to do. What ever you enjoy works. Some people run, some people watch TV. Whatever you choose do it for about an hour. Then come back to it.

Every writer gets writers block. Every writer writes some duds. God knows I have. I am sure there will be a few more

Check out MUSIC INSPIRES WRITING in the Blog I used the music trick and that ultimately lead to this post.
